Greetings & Music News

Hello friends!

The best news is that Darren’s CD release show was a huge success and incredibly fun. The band was terrific. Darren has recorded a catchy bunch of songs with great instrumental work to back them up. Arvid played on every track, slide, electric 12-string, sitar, and more. We’ll be sure to let you know where you can listen to and purchase Darren’s recording as soon as he gets all of that set up.

We’ve added some new songs to the repertoire, and we enjoyed playing them at a couple of shows this past month, first at the beautifully renovated, historic Larimer Center in Palatka. The Arts Council in Putnam County has worked hard to raise money to renovate the building and create a lively theatre and visual art center with performances and classes for people of all ages. The other night we traveled to Sarasota to perform at the Sarasota Folk Club’s long-running Sailing Squadron concerts. We watched a gorgeous sunset over the water, with all the sailboats bobbing in the harbor…..just a lovely sight.

This month we're on the bill for the first annual Gamble Rogers Memorial event at the Gamble Rogers Recreation Area in Flagler Beach, FL. We’ll be in great company with some of Florida’s finest musicians. We’re really honored to be a part of the celebration and remembrance of this remarkable musician and human being. We’ll also be performing at the annual Lake County Folk Festival in Eustis, FL and at a couple of private events, including Paddle Florida, a kayak trip on the Suwannee River. Arvid has a solo show at European Street Listening Room in Jacksonville on October 15. If you're anywhere nearby, you won't want to miss that! We’ll end the month at Magnoliafest on the beautiful Suwannee River. There we’ll be sitting in with folks, jamming and participating in workshops.

We appreciate your comments on the new look of our website.  If you haven’t taken a look, check it out!  We’re very excited about it.  If you have questions about anything, please e-mail us at tammerlin@bellsouth.net. We hope to see you out there somewhere!

Nobody’s Fault But Mine

The Kirtan is a gathering of like-minded folks to communally sing devotional music, much like the hootenannies of revival meetings of old. The music revolves around yogic chants of the shanty-shanti shanty \ shanty \ variety. Thus recently I attended a Kirtan held on an early Saturday night at Midnight Sun in 5 points. About 50 people were in attendance and a half dozen or so brought instruments.

Our hastily assembled little band included guitars, two harmoniums, various hand drums, rattles and a flute, while I brought along a sitar. Our leader, ashtanga yogi Tara Rawson, took everyone through all manner of sacred call and response with frequent contributions from the crowd.

As we were wrapping up for the evening my flute buddy, Phil O’Connell, yelled out,"have Arvid lead one!" That instantly on the spot feeling reared its head. After thinking for the eternal split second I stroked the sitar strings into Blind Willie Johnson’s immortal Nobody’s Fault But Mine..

The verses go like this:
“I got a Bible in My Home / I Got A Bible In My Home
If I don’t read My Soul Be Lost / (everyone) Nobody’s Fault But Mine” -then on to "I Am in the Heavenly Way" or "Sister Taught Me How to Read", etc. Surely different than Sanskrit, but a nice addition to the evening. I hope Blind Willie up in Heaven was pleased.

New for Fall- Orange Confit

  1. Cut and Juice an Orange, drink the juice.
  2. Boil the peel in white wine with black peppercorns and salt for 25 minutes.
  3. Let sit for a couple of hours.
  4. Remove and scrape away the white pith and cut the peel into strips.
  5. Place in a jar and immerse in olive oil.

In a day or two you’ll have orange infused oil that’s great for searing or flavoring pork and chicken. The peel cooks yummy too.

Lee's Corner

My morning run takes me back through the salt marsh to the intracoastal waterway. This morning, I found myself fascinated by small beauty. The grasses have flowered and are beginning to go to seed, and I couldn’t help but notice the remarkable variety of shapes and styles of the emerging seeds. There’s a seemingly infinite variety of designs out there for catching a ride, on the wind or on another creature. I’ve just started reading John Barth’s "The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor", and I’m totally enjoying listening to Darren’s new recording!

Chris's Corner

Chris has been recruited by a secret government organization. His whereabouts are secret. He can only communicate in code which we have yet to break. We suspect he will surface for a gig in the near future. Stay tuned for further developments.

Darren's Corner

Well, sometimes everything DOES go just the way you want it to. My CD is out and available for purchase and the party to celebrate it was excellent. Thanks to Arvid, Walt, Joey, Ernie and Forrest for making the songs sound great and thanks to Lee and Shane for being a part of it.

This is the point where I should say something really witty and unexpected and funny, but I've got nothing. Maybe next month.
You should get a copy of the new c.d. and we can talk about that next time I see you.
Have a great day!
